Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

I am reaching out to you this evening to tell you that we will be starting distance learning tomorrow, Friday, October 23.  Students will be able to return for face to face instruction on Monday, November 9.  Notifications were sent home today with students.  Students will need to log in to Google Classroom (www.classroom.google.com) and go to the Google Meet links at the top of their classroom page by 8:30 am tomorrow.  They will attend school virtually with their peers until roughly 11:30.  We will have breakfast available from 7:15 to 8:00 am and lunch available from 11:30-12:00.

At Grand Oaks School, we continually monitor our site in relation to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and overall safety of students and staff. Grand Oaks School has experienced a few positive cases of COVID-19 and we have worked diligently with Shasta County Public Health (SCPH) to ensure that all recommendations have been followed. We have conducted the necessary tracing and have communicated with families for those that were considered close contacts. Grand Oaks School has not reached the SCPH guidelines that would dictate our school to move into distance learning (DL). However, we have reached the point that we are experiencing a staff shortage due to a substitute teacher shortage and shortage of support staff to assist in coverage of classes. In collaboration with the District Administration, it has been decided that Grand Oaks will transition to full distance learning, starting tomorrow.  This decision is being made with an abundance of caution for students and staff. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the Grand Oaks main office at 275-7040. Thank you for your continued support

10/18/20

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

Thank you to everyone that attended a parent-teacher conference last week.  We enjoyed seeing you, whether it was in person, over the phone, or virtually!

We are back to our regular dismissal times with only Monday’s being minimum days.  Tomorrow students will get out at 1:00 pm.

Another reminder that the tardy bell rings at 7:45 am so students will need to be dropped off by 7:40 am to make it to their class on time.

We really appreciate the strong home support as we battle all things COVID-19 related.  We REALLY notice all of your patience as we, along with all schools in Shasta County, adjust to our new reality.  Thank you all so much!

Have a great week

10/11/20

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

We will have minimum days all this week, where school ends at 1:00 pm for parent-teacher conferences.  Please remember to wear your masks if you are going to attend a conference at school.

If you are interested in serving or nominating someone to serve on our School Site Council please call or drop by the office to submit a nomination form.

Just a reminder that students will need to check-in with the office if they aren’t able to get to their class by 7:45 am.  Please plan your morning so students can be dropped off before 7:40 am to ensure they can get to their classrooms before the tardy bell rings at 7:45 am.

We really appreciate the strong parent support with not sending students with symptoms to school and calling the office to let us know.

Thursday, 10/15/2020 is Think Pink Day!  Wear pink to show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness!

Have a great week!

10/4/20

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

We were all so happy to see our students back at school, live and in-person, last week!

If you are interested in serving or nominating someone to serve on our School Site Council please call or drop by the office to submit a nomination form.

The first bell rings at 7:42 am and the tardy bell rings at 7:45 am.  Please have your students to school by 7:40 am to ensure they can get to class on time and not be marked tardy.

Please keep your student Chromebooks at home.  We have new Chromebooks for the classroom.  If we need to switch back to distance learning in the future your student will already have their Chromebooks and be ready to go!

Don’t forget tomorrow is a minimum-day Monday.  School will end at 1:00 pm.

Virtual Academy students will log into their Google Classrooms starting tomorrow and look for more information there.  Also, work from last week will need to be turned in to the office tomorrow.

Have a great week!

9/27/20 Parent All Call Message

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

We miss our students and families and are excited about seeing everyone tomorrow.

Just a reminder that students are not allowed on campus until 7:15 am due to supervision.

Also, we have a few reminders of the safety and health protocols that will be strictly followed.  All students will wear face coverings as they enter, exit, and walk around the campus.  We will practice social distancing, more frequent hand-washing and sanitizing, and the use of face coverings will be followed according to public health guidelines for the specified grade levels.  However, as we have stated before, the first line of defense starts at home.  If your student isn’t feeling well they may not come to school.  If they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms (like fever, breathing issues, fatigue, body aches, headache, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea) they may not come to school.  The county public health guidelines state that they must stay at home for 10 days OR be cleared by a doctor or have a negative COVID-19 test to return to school.

If you need to change or verify your student’s after-school pick-up plans please call our office to update how your student will be going home. Bus schedule times and route information are available on our website, under the “Parents” tab.  Please review this document if your student is taking the bus.

Don’t forget tomorrow is a minimum-day Monday.  School ends at 1:00 pm.

Have a great week!

9/20/20 All Call Message

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

As we prepare for face-to-face instruction, which will be starting in one week from tomorrow (Monday, September 28), there are a few things we would like to remind you of before we come back.

Your student will continue with the after school pick-up plans they had the first 8 days of school.  If you need to change or verify those plans, please call our office to make any updates with how your student will be going home.  Please remember if you need to make an occasional change to pick-up plans to call before the last hour of school to ensure we can communicate these changes with ease.

It is important for your student’s safety that you arrange for student drop-off to be after 7:15 am, as there is no supervision prior to 7:15 am.

Although we are returning to face-to-face instruction, all safety and health protocols will be strictly followed.  We will continue to practice social distancing, more frequent hand-washing and sanitizing, and the use of face coverings.

We miss our students and families and are excited about seeing you again very soon.

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

Grand Oaks School will be moving from distance learning to face-to-face instruction starting Monday, September 28, 2020.  We will continue adhering to the safety protocols that were put in place for the first 8 days of school when students were present.

We recognize that some students will be unable to return to face-to-face instruction and will need to continue in distance learning.  Please take a moment to complete the following form so we may plan for students returning and those that will remain on distance learning.

9/7/20 Parent All Call

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

We will be having an opportunity to pick-up resources on Wednesday, September 9 from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm in our office.  This is for teachers to get new resources, copies, and supplies to their students and an opportunity to drop off work that has been completed.  Again, this Wednesday from 7:30 to 3:00 students can pick up and drop off their work in the office.  This is NOT for students receiving instruction through packet-work.  Packet exchanges will continue to take place every Monday (or Tuesday this week due to Labor Day).

If you were unable to purchase a yearbook from last year we have extra copies for purchase in the office.  They are $15.00 and first come, first served.

We are happy to announce that our district received a waiver that allows us to offer breakfast and lunch for all students free while in distance learning.  Students must be in the car, but can go to Buckeye School of the Arts, Shasta Lake School, or our site to pick up.  Meals will also be available from 12:00 to 12:10 near Riddle Road and 12:30 to 12:50 at the Lakehead Store.

Have a great evening and Labor Day!

8/30/20 Parent All Call

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

Thank you, families, for all of the support in educating your students.  The teachers really notice and appreciate all of the efforts you are putting in behind the scenes!

Technical issues will, unfortunately, be an issue that everyone will probably experience at least once while on distance learning.  If you have any difficulty you can email or Class Dojo your teacher or call the office.  Again, we appreciate your patience!

You can pick up breakfast from 7:15 to 8:00 and lunch from 11:30 to 12:00 at the front of our school.  Follow the sign.  Prices for meals are full pay or reduced meal prices based on eligibility. Eligibility is determined after completion of the Free and Reduced Meal Application Form.

For students working with packets, remember to turn in your work tomorrow and pick up your new packet of instruction.  Work completion is necessary for attendance credit.

Have a great evening and see y’all tomorrow :)

8/23/20 Parent All Call

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

Tomorrow we will start our first day of distance learning!  Students can sign in to their Google Classrooms for the link to their Google Meet between 8:00 and 8:30 am.  Class starts (in the Google Meet) at 8:30 am.  Attendance will be taken every day.  They will be online with their teacher teaching them from 8:30 to 11:30 am.  Their lunch break will be between 11:30 to 12:00.  From 12:00 to 1:00 they will work on independent work and have the opportunity to go back online with their teachers if they have any questions or need help.

Students that started the school year with independent study will need to turn in their work tomorrow in the office and pick up resources that were sent home with students last week.  Our office will be open from 7:15 am to 3:30 pm.

If you have any concerns about distance learning, please contact our office or email the teacher.

If you intend on picking up breakfast or lunch the location will be in front of the cafeteria.  Breakfast will be available for pick up from 7:15 to 8:00 and lunch will be available from 11:30 to 12:00.  Please contact the school if you intend on picking up a meal so we can prepare accordingly.  You will be able to pick up the meals, drive-thru style, by entering the bus lane, with a U-turn, from the east-side entrance (driving the correct direction).

Everyone has a great evening and a great first week of distance learning :)

8/19/20 Parent All-Call

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

We are nearing the end of our face-to-face instruction and will be starting distance learning this Monday, August 24.  Students on Independent Study will need to turn in their work on Monday, August 24, pick up new materials, and be ready to join their classmates virtually for distance learning.

It is important to note that the distance learning we are about to engage in is different from what most schools went through in April, May, and June.  Senate Bill 98 dictates protocols we must adhere to while instructing students in distance learning.  Students are required to check-in online EVERY DAY and COMPLETE work to get credit for attendance.

All Kindergarten through 5th-grade students will be on the same schedule.  It will require them to log-in to their teacher’s Google Meet by 8:30 am, but may check-in as early as 8:00 am to allow for a virtual recess.  They will be with their teacher and class until 11:30 am where they will then break for lunch until 12:00 pm.  Students will then work on their independent work from 12:00 to 1:00, with the teacher being available for questions through their Google Meet.

Distance Learning Schedule

8:00-8:30

Check-In

8:30-11:30

Online Instruction (with the teacher)

11:30-12:00

Lunch

12:00-1:00

Independent Work (with teacher support)

Students will need to log-in to their Chromebooks with their email address and enter their password, which is their lunch number.  Or, some students have clever badges.  Students have been training all week to be ready to do this.

Breakfast and Lunch will be served at our campus each day for purchase or free under the Free and Reduced Lunch program.  Please send in your application if you haven’t done so already.  Breakfast will be served from 7:15-8:00 am and lunch will be served from 11:30-12:00. Please notify the office at 275-7040 if you intend on picking up meals so we can prepare to meet the demand.  Also, breakfasts and lunches are free for the month of August :)

We understand that you have experienced frustration from the distance learning you may have experienced in the Spring while the whole world was trying to figure out how to educate students from their homes.  We’ve got solid plans in place and will all be available at school to help.  I cannot stress this enough.  If you start to feel frustrated or need help, please don’t hesitate to reach out.  You can always call us here at school, or email your teacher directly.  We, at Grand Oaks School, will all be here.  We understand the possible hurdles.  We are all ready to help.

8/16/2020 Parent All-Call

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

Thank you everyone for a great first week!  Thank you to the students for arriving every day with their masks on and doing their very best to stay distanced from their friends.  Thank you parents for being patient in the parking lot while we are experiencing more pick-ups and drop-off than in the past.  And, thank you to the Grand Oaks Staff for working so hard to make sure EVERYTHING runs smoothly!

I want to remind everyone to ask your children how they feel before they go to school.  This is our first line of defense.  COVID-19 symptoms are fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. If any student is showing any of the symptoms they will be sent home.  They will not be able to return to school until cleared by a physician or for at least 10 days after the onset of symptoms, 24 hours with no fever, and showing improvement in other symptoms.  We understand that some symptoms have reasonable explanations but we must follow protocols given to us by local and state health officials.

This week we are moving lunch recess to the students’ classrooms.  It’s just going to be too hot to have them outside, with the predicted heatwave.

Students on Independent Study will continue working on their work and will need to turn it in by Monday, August 24.  Then, they will join their class, virtually, as we enter into distance learning, site-wide.  More details about distance learning will be released this week.

Let’s all have a great 5 days before as we transition into distance learning!  Have a great week!

8/11/20 Principal All Call Message

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

This is Kati Parsons, Principal at Grand Oaks School.  I hope everyone is winding down their summer this evening with more positive thoughts than nervous ones as we get ready for the first day of school tomorrow.  This first day of school will look different than any others with masks, zoned recesses, and distancing.  Even though things will seem very different as we meet the new requirements, know that the excitement that all the staff members at Grand Oaks School have for your student’s return will be the same.

Kindergarten parents remember to wear your masks if you plan on walking your student to the Kindergarten drop off zone, just off the main gated entrance of our school at the Kindergarten playground and grassy area.

For students on Independent Study please make sure you pick up your student’s school work from the office to ensure they get credit.  Without signing the contract and picking up their work they will be counted as absent from school. Also, for students on Independence Study, please contact the school if you are interested in participating in our breakfast and lunch programs.

For returning students, go plug in your Chromebooks tonight and put them near your backpack so you don’t forget them tomorrow.  Also, consider bringing a water bottle (with your name labeled) since our drinking fountains will be turned off.  Although we will have cups to use for the sinks it’s always nice to have your favorite water bottle.

In case you see me tomorrow, with my mask on, just know I will be smiling.  And, know that every teacher’s favorite day is the first day of school.

Have a great evening and great first day of school--no matter how it may look 😊

8/10/20 Principal All Call Message

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

I am reaching out to you tonight to remind you that students’ classes will be posted on the doors to the lobby of our cafeteria tomorrow at 4:00 pm.  Our campus will be open until 6:00 pm if you would like to show your student to his or her classroom to help with any first day jitters.

Students that are on Independent Study need to pick up their work and sign their Independent Study Contract by Wednesday.

Thank you and have a good evening.

8/7/20 Principal All Call Message

Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

Thank you everyone for being so patient while we try to keep up with the ever-changing requirements and concerns for reopening school.  I know you were already contacted by our superintendent, Jim Harrell earlier today so I apologize for the number of contacts.  To paraphrase his correspondence, he called to clarify that we will be starting school with mandated safety precautions on Wednesday, August 12, 2020.  We will go to distance learning, starting Monday, August 24, 2020.  Students will come to school for 8 days before we go virtual.  Student classes will be posted Tuesday, August 11, 2020, at 4:00 pm on the lobby doors to our gym.

For families that have requested Independent Study from our website, you may pick up the work for your students on Monday or Tuesday before school starts to get credit for attendance.  The work will need to be returned by August 24 to receive credit.

There are a few things for you to know about our upcoming school year.  School starts at 7:45 am and will end at 2:00 pm.  Students will be allowed to enter the campus starting at 7:15 am. We will be serving our normal breakfast option for those that participate in that program. When arriving at school students will go eat breakfast if they participate in this program and then go directly to their classroom.  We won’t have the morning recess because there would be too many students from too many classroom cohorts out on the playground at one time.

For ALL returning students: please bring your school-issued Chromebooks (charged without the cord) every day, starting the first day of school.

Although current guidelines for face coverings are less restrictive for Kindergarten through second grade ALL students must wear a mask arriving, departing, and in the hallways. Students will not be permitted on the bus without a mask and must sit in their assigned seat designated by the bus driver.  Please label your student’s face covering with their name in permanent ink (along with their seaters, lunch boxes, and water bottles).

We are currently not allowing any visitors past the office boundaries and they must also wear masks within the school boundaries.  We understand that this could be difficult for new Kindergarten students, so we will have a Kindergarten drop off zone on Kindergarten playground for the first three days of school for parents with face covering to help students acclimate.

Our first line of defense starts at home.  Please screen your student every day before sending them to school.  They will not be able to come to school if they are showing signs of being ill or have a fever.

If you missed anything in a phone call you can always check your email, as I always send out a matching email. Facebook and our district website are also options for checking for current information.

Have a great weekend,
Kati Parsons

7/22/20
Good Evening Grand Oaks Families,

I am hoping everyone is having a good summer and remaining healthy and safe.

As I am sure all of you are aware, current information about reopening schools under the response to COVID-19 is changing constantly. You can find the latest information about reopening on the district website http://www.gateway-schools.org/ and our Grand Oak’s website http://goes.gwusd.org/. The information posted describes reopening in the possibility of four phases. We are currently planning for reopening schools in “Phase 3.”

Phase 3 outlines the safety protocols that Gateway Schools will be implementing when your student returns Wednesday, August 12, 2020. Students will be kept in their cohort classrooms to help keep interactions between different classrooms to a minimum. Face coverings will be required for all adults and 3rd-5th grade students (unless they are medically exempt). Face coverings are strongly encouraged for Kindergarten through 2nd-grade students.  However, ALL students will need to wear masks on buses, and when arriving, departing, and moving about the campus. This is to lessen the likelihood of transmission of COVID-19 when different cohort classrooms are using the same spaces. Students will be distanced in classrooms, also to help lessen interactions. Any visitors will need to wear a mask while on campus and will be permitted only to the office.

We understand that some parents are seeking a stay-at-home option, or an independent study form of educating their students.  Please complete the interest form from our school’s website or by clicking here: Independent Study Request This is ONLY if you are intending on not sending your student back to school and are requesting Independent Study. This program will look different from Distance Learning that our school provided April through June.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office at 275-7040 between the hours of 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Take care and stay safe!
Kati Parsons
