From the Principal

Dear Grand Oaks Families,

We are preparing to have our annual school spelling bee.  We can only have one top speller to represent us in the county competition, and it is  a good experience for all students to see and support their classmates.

There are approximately 10 weeks of school before students take the State STAR test.  The third through sixth grades will be implementing more math interventions to help struggling math students.  We need your support at home practicing basic math facts.  State standards require students to master (memorize) basic addition and subtraction facts, as well as multiplication and division of numbers 0-10.  Addition and subtraction math facts should be memorized by the end of second grade, with multiplication and division facts memorized by the end of third grade.

We recently installed 2 new benches on our Kinder playground.  These benches were donated to Grand Oaks by our wonderful Parent Club.  Thank you so much!

We are continuing to have a problem with students being dropped off before 7:15 am.  Please remember that there is no supervision available on the playground until 7:15 am.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

Mr. Rubin

WANT YOUR CHILDREN TO EAT BETTER? LET THEM COOK!

The kitchen can be a fun and exciting place.  Think back to when you were young and mom or dad was busy cooking up a storm.  Surely you were fascinated by the cooking noises, sights like steam and colorful foods, and don't forget the delicious aromas filling up the house.

Cooking can teach your children more than how to prepare a recipe.  Here are just four reasons why cooking with your children will benefit you both:

Children are receptive to discussing nutrition while immersed in hands-on food tasks.  Preparing meals and snacks together created the perfect environment to talk about healthy food choices and building balanced meals.

Children are more likely to be adventurous about trying new foods when they took part in preparing it.

Cooking allows you to teach your children and to share your memories about family members and recipes, while creating new memories for your child.

Cooking allows children to learn about responsibility, following directions and seeing a project through to completion.

There is a little chef in every child.  No matter their age, kids have a place in the kitchen.  Assign your children to age-appropriate tasks and take precautions to keep them safe from hot surfaces and sharp utensils.  Toddlers can use their imaginations and play with pots, containers and spoons while pretending to cook with you.  Preschoolers can begin to get more hands-on with simple tasks like counting ingredients and stirring a batter.  School-aged children can measure and combine ingredients while learning about recipes and using their math skills.  Teens can advance their skills and try new adventurous cuisines.  They can even take a solo role in preparing a meal for the family.

So get your kids involved today.  Start by talking about their favorite meals and snacks and decide if there is one that your child can take part in.  Take things as step further by shopping for the ingredients together.
Remember that even adults have a hard time being neat and tidy in the kitchen.  Be patient and count on a little extra mess when cooking with young children.  Try to keep calm and maintain a light and pleasant mood.  Let your child know that “mistakes and messes will happen, but we should be careful and always clean up after ourselves.”  Be sure to keep your children interested in cooking by offering many compliments on their job well done.

School Arrival Time

Please remember there is NO SUPERVISION before 7:15am
in the morning.
For your child's safety, DO NOT allow your child to be at school prior to that time. Students cannot get into the classrooms that early and they have no where to wait except the playground, which may still be dark at that hour.

                                                                     Classes Begin
                                                             at
                                                  7:30am for grade 6,
                                               7:45am for grades 4 & 5,
                                         8:00am for Kindergarten - 3rd grade

Campus Safety/Campus Visitors

Parents and volunteers must sign in at the office and receive a visitor's pass when on campus during school hours. It is the law.
Remember to check in at the office before taking your child out of school during school hours.
This is for the safety of all our students.
This year the southwest gate will be locked from 8:05am until 2:00pm.
This is to help us ensure that each child or visitor checks in and out during instructional hours. You will need to enter the campus through the double doors next to the gym/cafeteria.
We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.
